30 YRS IN ATLANTIC, PACIFIC, GULF & CARIBBEAN: Alan is a USCG licensed Master (Captain) of Inspected Passenger Vessels, Steam, Motor or Sail up to 200 tons for all U.S. and Foreign Waters., with over 30 years of experience in the operation of power and sail small vessels under 200 tons, and has skippered super-yachts up to 185 ft. has since logged over 150,000 miles underway in the Atlantic and the ICW from the Canadian Maritimes to Key West, including the entire Chesapeake, Long Island Sound, and Penobscot Bay, in the Caribbean including; Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, St Maarten, St. Kitts, Antigua, Martinique, Barbados, Jamaica, Aruba, Curacao, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the coasts of Venezuela, Columbia, and Panama to Yucatan, and in the Pacific Ocean from Panama to Alaska, including all the normal ports of Mexico, Baja, Sea of Cortez, California coast, Puget Sound and British Columbia to Southeast Alaska, and west to Hawaii as far as Kauai.
CERTIFIED SAIL TRAINING MASTER: He has over 20 years experience as the Sailing Master aboard sail training vessels including coastal service aboard traditional Gaff Ketches and Schooners up to 127 ft. He has been certified a Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor by the American Sailing Association since 1989.
NAVY TRAINED NAVIGATOR: He began ocean sailing as navigator aboard a 2700 ton Navy Destroyer, and his Navy career took him to Okinawa, Japan and the Philippines, in the Western Pacific and Guantanamo Bay Cuba.
SHIP'S OPERATING ENGINEER – A graduate Mechanical Engineer, and experienced mechanic, he has served as Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) & Chief Engineer, with diesel plants up to 1500 hp, and as small as 6 hp, and all manner of gasoline inboards, outboards, and stern drives. He has supervised rebuilding of in place diesels up to 350 hp, and diesel replacements up to 150 hp.
Certified Instructor, Boating Safety: He has instructed dozens of classes in sailing and boating safety and is certified by the ARC and the ASA. Semi-fluent in Spanish: He studied Spanish for five years in high school and college, and is semi-fluent. His Spanish is formal where most people he encounters use forms of Mexican or South American slang which he may not understand. Consequently, he is easily understood by Spanish speakers, but he cannot always understand their questions. He overcomes this by being patient and asking for clarifications. But, he is a quick study and will quickly assimilate the local dialect.
